Counselling

Ask your self these questions;

Have I tried to give up before and not been able to stick with it?

Do I know what went wrong?

What could i do differently this time?

If you would like help in answering these questions for yourself, then think about seeing a counsellor.

The role of a counsellor

They wont tell you what to do, judge you or even advise you. Their job is to help you develop your own answers and solutions.

Nobody can come off drugs or alcohol for you, ultimately that has to be your responsibility. But why go through it alone and without the support of someone who will do their best to understand?

The good news

The good news is that most of the withdrawal symptoms of a drug or alcohol dependency can be controlled or made easier by medication. Within a couple of weeks you will no longer be physically dependant on drugs or alcohol. The bad news is that psychological dependence cannot be taken away by withdrawal. Counselling for dependency aims to address this psychological dependence and reduce the chances of returning to drug or alcohol use in the future.

Helping you to understand your problem

Many people enjoy their use of drugs or alcohol, but for some this can get out of hand. Counselling can help in those cases where people just want to get their life back on track. It can help you identify how to make changes and make sure you have support whilst you are doing this.

Other people develop alcohol problems for a variety of reasons e.g. to give you confidence. Counselling gives you the chance, in your own time, to identify any underlying causes your alcohol or drug use helps you cope with in your life. You can become more aware of any triggers and learn other ways of dealing with things.
