Criminal Justice
CAN deliver many services as part of the Drug Intervention Programme (DIP). Working in partnership with other agencies (Police, NDAS, Probation and Aquarius.) we work together to enable drug misusing offenders to get out of crime and into treatment.
As part of the criminal justice intervention team (CJIT) CAN in Northamptonshire help to deliver the drug intervention programme by delivering the following services;
Police custody
Our CJIT drug workers operate from police custody across the county, working with individuals who have been arrested and are using class A drugs. Our drug workers will provide information/harm reduction, referral onto appropriate services and offer ongoing support where necessary. THe involvement from the individual is voluntary in the north of the county however in Northamptonshire 'Tough Choices' is now in place, this means that anyone over the age of eighteen arrested on a trigger offence (e.g. shoplifting, burglary etc..) will be tested for the use of class A drugs. If the test is positive the individual will be required by law to undertake an assessment with the drug worker.
Courts
Our CJIT drug workers will work with individuals who are going through the court process, they will offer appropriate information, support, referrals into treatment where appropriate and will liaise with other professionals such as probation, key workers and solicitors. individuals who have tested positive in the tough choices areas will most likely be eligible for 'Restrictions on Bail' (ROB), this will mean that if the individual receives bail they will have restrictions put on it e.g. they must attend treatment appointments that have been set out by your drug worker. Our CJIT drug worker will ensure the smooth running of restrictions of bail.
Outreach
We operate an outreach service in Northampton where our CJIT drug worker will pro-actively reach out to individuals who maybe homeless and/or not engaging with services, our outreach worker provides the essential link to the remainder of the CJIT workers and other services to provide a seamless service for existing and potential clients.
Aftercare
CAN provides an aftercare service for individuals who are released from custodial sentences, complete community sentences and/or leave treatment. The CJIT drug workers will provide advice and support providing options of further treatment if appropriate, help with housing issues, support with benefits, finances, employment, education and training opportunities, referral into other services if appropriate such as mental health, rebuilding family relationships and so on.
24 hour help line
CAN also provides a 24 hour help line for existing or potential CJIT clients. This service offers information and advice on drug misuse, harm reduction and local access to needle exchanges, local information and contact details about appropriate services such as homelessness, accident and emergency and access to wrap around services. We will also refer individuals into local services and link them back to their CJIT worker where appropriate.
Alternative Therapies
Our criminal justice team also provide a countywide auricular acupuncture service offering five clinics a month across the county. We have also recently begun to offer Reiki at our Corby office for CJIT clients, which is proving to be very successful.
