Northamptonshire Drink Drive Partnership

The Northamptonshire Drink Drive Course is a partnership between the County Council Road Safety Department, CAN and Northamptonshire Police (Road Policing Unit).

Through a combination of alcohol education, experimental exercises, discussion groups and coursework, the course is run with an average client to trainer ratio of 12:2.

The Course Referral Criteria

The Magistrate must make the referral order during the appearance at court and at the time of sentencing; an order cannot be made after leaving the court and neither can someone take the course voluntarily without such an order being made.

The current cost of the course is £185 and payment can be made by instalments, credit/debit card or by cheque or cash.  The course fee has to be paid (cheques cleared) before the commencement of the course.

Upon successful completion of the course the participant with receive a certificate of completion entitling 25% remission, or other such amount up to 25% as directed by the magistrates, from their stated ban.

Successful completion is dependent upon the following criteria being met:

·    The course fee must be paid in full prior to commencement

·    Attendance at all sessions of the course, 16 hours in total.

·    Active participation in discussion and complete course work/tasks as directed.

Course Objectives

  • To raise the participants awareness of the consequences of drinking and driving
  • To raise the level of knowledge about the effects of alcohol upon the mind and body - specifically in relation to driving ability and driver impairment
  • To raise awareness of the many isues surrounding alcohol: including that of avilability, accessibility, the concept of units and the impact of inappropriate or excessive drinking
  • To bring about a change in attitude to the law and their approach to driving and, through cascading of information, better inform relations and peers
  • To develop strategies to avoid re-offending and recognise the pressures to drink anbd drive that they must learn to resist

The Course is approved by the Secretary of State and is structured to run over two full days and two evening sessions and includes the following elements:

  • Attitudes, self and others to Drink-Driving
  • Examination of the consequences of the offence
  • Exploration of why we drink alcohol
  • Units and sensible drinking
  • Peer influences, and pressures to drink
  • The management and interpretation of a drink diary
  • Effects of alcohol on the brain and the body
  • Drink driving and the law
  • Effects of alcohol on driving
  • Causation factors of accidents and collisions
  • The role of alcohol in society
  • The role of the media and marketing
  • Coping strategies in high-risk situations
  • Looking at what makes a good driver
  • Examination of the offence as it relates from and individual and societal perspective.
